Las Vegas was established as a railroad town in 1905 and used as a staging point for mines in the surrounding area. The completion of the nearby Hoover Dam sparked interest in the city but it was the state legalisation of gambling in 1931 that set the city on its path to what it is today. Interestingly Fremont Street, where the early casinos were located, was the first paved street in the city. The first resort to open on what is now the central strip was the El Rancho Vegas in 1941. Las Vegas, today, is unashamedly bold, brash and provides the perfect backdrop for an unadulterated celebration.
Most visitors spend their time in Vegas inside the casinos, bars and restaurants; therefore the outdoor temperature really becomes immaterial. Despite this, Las Vegas enjoys a subtropical desert climate. In July the temperature rises to around 40 degrees, while in winter the mercury peaks at 13 degrees.
Many Broadway and west end productions are staged in Vegas. The Lion King, the Rat Pack, Jersey Boys and Cirque du Soleil perform to sell out houses. Seeing a show in Vegas is almost as mandatory as having a flutter. In November the city hosts the Las Vegas Comedy Festival and in December the rodeo hits the town with the National Rodeo Finals.
Air
From New Zealand, airlines generally fly through a connecting airport such as Los Angeles before touching down in Las Vegas. The following airlines fly to Los Angeles from New Zealand:
Flights from Auckland to Los Angeles take around 12 hours and flights from Los Angeles to Las Vegas take another an hour.
Alternatively, driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas takes around 4 hours and will give you a more scenic and leisurely approach.

Sights to See
As an entertainment paradise, the foremost attraction is the casinos and with no windows or clocks it’s very easy to lose yourself in the excitement of the flutter. To engender the fantasy theme, many casinos create special experiences. The iconic fountains outside the Bellagio dance in a synchronised fashion to music, the volcano outside The Mirage erupts in a spectacular fashion and you can take a gondola ride at the Venetian Hotel. Also check out the world’s largest gold nugget in the Golden Nugget Hotel.
Las Vegas attracts world-famous performers. David Copperfield’s magic show continues to astound especially when he flies through the audience. Human Nature and Donny and Marie’s performances delight, with Celine Dion, Barry Manilow and Rod Stewart’s shows often sold out.

Las Vegas is a safe destination. However you should exercise general caution, as you would in modern city. All casinos and hotels take safety seriously and will always assist if you feel threatened.
Weather
During summer, keep hydrated as the temperature does rise up to 40 degrees. Wear sunscreen and a hat to protect your skin from the sun.
