Overview Tab

In 1820 the Sheikh’s of the region, including the Sheikh of Dubai, signed a General Maritime Peace Treaty with Britain, with Dubai reaffirming UK protection in 1892. It was Dubai’s strategic location that allowed the city to flourish as an important trading port and became known for its pearl exports. In 1971, when Britain formerly left the region, Dubai together with Abu Dhabi and five other emirates formed the United Arab Emirates. Today the reputation of Dubai as a glitzy, modern resort city with a fairy tale quality is undisputed.

Dubai is a year round destination with hot summers and mild winters. July and August are the hottest months with average temperatures of 41 degrees, while in winter the mercury rises to an average of 23 degrees.

Dubai hosts many festivals throughout the year including the golf tournament, the Dubai Desert Classic, the Dubai Rugby Sevens and the Dubai Tennis Championship. As a favoured pastime in Dubai is shopping, the city plays host to the annual Dubai Shopping Festival, where 2,500 shops and stalls entice visitors with their wares. The Middle East International Motor Show is another major event on the calendar.

    Sights to See

Dubai made worldwide headlines in 2010 when it opened the tallest building on the planet, the Burj Khalifa. Rising 828 metres, the structure is an incredible site on the Dubai skyline. Inside you have the opportunity of travelling up to the observation deck on Level 124. There’s also a plethora of entertainment options contained within the tower. Also in town, check out the magical Dubai Fountain, an incredible dancing fountain. Other attractions include the marina and the Palm Islands. Needless to say, shopping is a favoured past time in this city.

Away from the glitz of the shopping malls, Dubai presents beautiful beaches for oceanic pursuits. Diving is popular off the coast. The family will enjoy Wild Wadi, a water theme park and there’s an indoor skiing centre to remind you of cooler climates.

There are remains of traditional Dubai including the Jumeirah Mosque and the architecture found in the Bastakiya District. The Dubai Museum is also a fascinating introduction to the region.

    Don't leave home without...

Sunscreen and insect repellent are available through the country, however they may be more expensive than bringing them from Australia. Items left behind in Australia can generally be replaced if needed in Dubai.

    Local Customs

The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim nation that follows Islamic traditions. Be considerate during Ramadan and don’t eat in front of locals observing the fast during daylight hours. Dress modestly when visiting religious buildings and remove your shoes when entering a mosque.

    Things to be careful of…

    Drugs

Possession of trace amounts of illicit drugs can lead to lengthy jail sentences.

    Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs

Bringing prescription or over-the-counter drugs readily available in some other countries into the United Arab Emirates can lead to jail or deportation. Check in advance to avoid prosecution.
